about

The Unbroken Line recalls a young Angela Davis (Chaunice Chapman) testifying before Congress during Nelson Rockefeller's Vice Presidential confirmation hearings. Ms. Davis illuminates the Unbroken Line connecting systematic slavery to systematic incarceration.

lyrics

The Unbroken Line

As I recall it was a misty day
A light rain was falling on that dreary day
Many of the brothers had decided to stay
In D Yard on that fateful day

And the helicopters came and hovered overhead
Raining teargas showers on the yard
Bombs exploding like thunderclaps
In the rain and in the mud 39 dead in cold blood
Check it — the unbroken line
The new slave system by design

As I recall it was a misty day
A light rain was falling on that dreary day
Many of the brothers had decided to stay
In D Yard on that fateful day

And then you step on my neck then ask me whether I approve of violence
And then you plant crosses in my yard and ask me whether I approve of violence
And then you shoot down these Attica brothers after you shot down George Jackson
And then you order a massacre from your governors chair and then you ask me whether I approve of violence
Check it — the unbroken line
The new slave system by design

As I recall it was a misty day
A light rain was falling on that dreary day
Many of the brothers had decided to stay
In D Yard on that fateful day

How many have died by my side
How many churches have burned
How many times have we gathered to mourn
You call me a fugitive but we’re something more dangerous
We are revolutionaries
We are revolutionaries
We are the answer to Rockefeller’s system
We are calling for prison abolition
Check it — the unbroken line
The new slave system by design

Prisons do not disappear problems
They disappear human beings
